No, I didn't get it in Netflix.
I am a coward. I have trouble watching these movies because I have imaginative displacement. This means the smallest of noises clicks a trigger in my tiny brain, activating all the bad things I've ever seen. It began with Jurassic Park. Thanks to that film, all of my nightmares now involve being chased and/or eaten by dinosaurs. But I digress. This is a review, not therapy...
Cloverfield is the story of a handful of people trying to get through New York City during a giant monster/alien attack. Imagine Godzilla in first person POV. I'm probably, as usual, the last person to see it. It's got the shakey-cam of Blair Witch so if you get car sick easily, try not to watch it. I think what the movie really has going for it is that it's tense. One is constantly thinking "Run. Just run. WTF are you doing, get out." It's natural. Our baser instincts tell us to size up the opponent. Can you fight it? Turn to page 3. Is it a lot bigger than you with lots of teeth and things? Turn to page GTFO. I couldn't relate with any character other than the one holding the camera. Maybe because it was like YOU were holding the camera. Well...in this case...I was, not you.
A lot of people thought it was stupid. Previews seem to be more interesting nowadays than the actual movie. Previews are quick, short and MEANT to get you hooked. The movie is long and there's a story and there never seems to be enough sex and explosions for guys.
Cloverfield was tense. It's got me all nerved up like this genre usually does. I had to stay at Mom's house with my brother and his wife because I didn't want to go home and end up being trampled to death all alone. If you want to see it, go ahead. If not, I don't blame you. I'm regretting it a bit...
And yes, at the end, out over the water, all the way to the right, you CAN see something crashing into the ocean. Well done, movie-obsessed friends, now...why did I care?
