The Point

Was there?

A 1970's animation narrated by Ringo Starr.  The plot is basically that in a world of points (everyone has a point on their heads, houses, art, the animals...think lots of triangles), a small boy is born without a point.  After you set aside your stupid innuendo giggles, he's really just a plain kid.  He gets banished and, while adventuring, learns that you don't need to have a point to have a point (in life).

I watched this probably when I was seven that last time and decided to try it again.  Typically I am disappointed by movies I loved as a child.

This was no different.

I kept trying to find the good point, such as that it's a frame-by-frame animation, meaning the color and lines and shapes shift as they move, which is kind of cool, to me.  There's love in coloring frame by frame.  But it means you've got a budget and if you want an hour's worth of animation, you're going to pull a Hanna-Barbera (read: reapeating scenes over and over again, rehashes and recycled images).

The dialog was, by far, the most obnoxious thing I could imagine.  Except Ringo's lines because Ringo is my god damn hero and don't you say SHIT about him to me.  The characters were constantly interrupting each other to make statements that didn't make any sense and were, in turn, interrupted.  You couldn't get a clear thought farther than an introduction.  I just wanted to be like: STOP.  JUST STOPPIT!

The second most obnoxious thing was the STUPID MUSIC.  Not badly played, mind you, but the lyrics were dumb as hell and the musical scenes were like Yellow Submarine meets Disney for drunken angry sex.  They were bad.  One musical number talked about being sad and that you should have a cup of tea and then dump it in the river, where it would go to the ocean and get eaten by a fish who get eaten by fish who get eaten by a whale who DECOMPOSES and then...something...and then make a pot of tea?  Just...those scenes burned like hell.

So, really, unless you're high and need something to wrap your brain around or if you're bored or curious, don't bother watching it.  Ringo Starr isn't worth it.

It was SO BAD.  OMFG.

There were honestly recognizable Disney characters but bastardized just enough to avoid copyright infringement.  And the musical numbers had the weirdest timing, too.  Usually they show up when someone has some exposition, but, like in Yellow Submarine, they just showed up when someone mentioned something that was a lyric in some song that conveniently coincided with the OMG WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS?!

Unless you're really really curious and have a weird eclectic littler video store, don't bother renting it.

Have no fear, I will not be renting it...ever.  lol
