The Killer by Jacamon/MatzThis graphic novel was bought on a whim.
Onlinecomics.net is advertising some rating/reviewing comic site and, instead of going to check it out, I ignore it. Every week.
A couple weeks ago and interesting image appeared in the banner.
Obviously better than that, but I had to scag that image (took me forever to find, too).
Anyway I DIDN'T read the review, but I wanted to read it. I went into town the following weekend. The comic store didn't have it, but Borders did. Expensive, but totally worth it.
"The Killer" Volume One is the only one currently available in English, since it's a French graphic novel.
I took it to work a few times, then realized the content in it might cost me my job, so I left it at home.
It's the story of a nameless assassin who is out for money to buy himself a paradise so he never has to do anything again. Most of the story is monologue about the human mind, spirit and will.
This graphic novel reminds me of the French book "The Stranger" which is mostly about a guy thinking to himself. There's death and violence and sex. It must be a French thing to have nameless characters in horrific settings monologueing about humans.
Anyway, I LOVED it. I can't wait for book two. The killer is sleek, vicious unemotional, but still human. He has his breakdowns and fears. If I had to choose a word to describe the book I'd say "quiet". Even with the monologues, the death and the artistic effects, everything just seems...serene.
The art is beautiful. Very traditional, but there's something kind of...antique about it. Like this is in the past, although everything is present-tense (laptops, cell phones, etc). In one scene, the killer has a small meltdown and the visual is perfect for a broken mind; someone about to crack.
If you have a spare $20 you're not using on gas or food, find the hardback copy of "The Killer" Volume One and share your thoughts.
(Also the killer totally looks and acts like Huitzilopochtli if he shaved his hair back...seriously. <3 )
