Kakurenbo

Too.  Short.

Actually, it wasn't as good as the reviews said it was going to be.  Plus, in the case of personal preference, I really did not like the animation style.  The style was that of some American animation company using CG animation to make an anime and that just pisses me off.  It's like a tofurkey for Thanksgiving.

The plot of "Kakurenbo" is a mysterious game of hide and seek.  You play it with seven kids, all wearing fox masks, and in a demon-infested city (really there are only four demons...that's like saying my apartment is infested with money :: rimshot and headshot :: ).  "Kids go missing during the game of Totokoyo" they say again and again.  They never really played hide and seek...at all.  They ran around the city looking for symbols and got jumped by wooden demons (who were cool).  I GUESS the main character is the small boy whose name I can't remember who is looking for his sister who went missing the last time it was played.

My biggest problem was, aside from the animation, that it was haphazard.  Too many fade-outs.  No really story.  It was like playing hopscotch with my brain.  Things I DID like about it were the lack of dialogue at parts.  There were so many opportunities for the characters to say really stupid shit and be all "badass", but they kept their mouths shut and it made them stronger.  The demons were interesting because they were mechanized wooden structures that creeked and groaned.  One tried to laugh, I think, and it just make this strange wooden sound.  I liked the demons.

I guess if you pee yourself over everything that comes out of Japan you should pick this up.  If you DO rent it, be sure to get something else too.  It's only 25 minutes long.  If you like story, depth and good animation, try another movie.  Or rent Kung Fu Hustle.  Super sweet.
