After finally feeling like I had a good definition of Huitzilopochtli (who in about 300 other codices, is anything from Quetzalcoatl's brother to betrayer and part-time wet nurse), I stumble over something else.

One rumor says that Huitzilopochtli, who jumped out of Coatlicue the giant two-headed snake beast,  started out as Tezcalipoca, the black wizard who betrayed Quetzalcoatl.  When he became Huitzilopochtli he became the big boss man in Tenochtitlan with Tlaloc.  I'm not even going to go into the muck I had to dredge through to simplify this for myself.

Today while poking around, I discover that Tezcalipoca can become Mixcoatl, the god of hunting and war and fire and guy stuff like that.  Mixcoatl is also the father of Quetzalcoatl and Huitzilopochtli.  Not only that, but Huitzilopochtli became Mextli, the supreme god of Mexico.  Not only THAT, but there's also a BIGGER claim that Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl, Xipe-Totec and Tezcalipoca all came from the Man/Woman creator god.

...

NOW DO YOU SEE WHY I CREATE MY OWN VERSION OF MYTHOLOGIES?!

MY definition in case you care goes like this:

Tezcalipoca was born to Coatlicue and slayed this family.  He attacked Quetzalcoatl one night and banished him, claiming to the other gods that Quetzalcoatl had slept with a priestess and set himself on fire. In the mean time, he was appointing himself the new lord and took on the name Huitzilopochtli.

See?  Much more user friendly.

Don't EVEN get me started on the Hindu theology...

At least with Norse mythology, the only real question is it's interaction with former real live people.

Aztecs have that TOO.

Quetzalcoatl is either a god, an emperor with the same name or some guy who took the god's name because he was full of himself (read: emperor).

Quetzalcoatl had slept with a priestess and set himself on fire.
...
Does no-one else find that explanation hilarious?

(I used to love reading up on mythologies; I never got very far with Aztec, and now I remember why...  Shocked )

I so badly want to take some theology classes but my state is sorely lacking in offering them (uprising in grumpy athetists I guess).
